Owners of the Rhyl gas field based in Morecambe bay have today said they expect to produce gas until "well beyond" 2020, Energy Live News reports.
The UK gas field was only recently discovered in 2009 and is located next to a number of fields which have been pumping gas since 1985, it is believed the Rhyl underground reservoir could contain 80 billion cubic feet. Based 39km off the Lancashire coast the gas field has created 400 jobs and the owners Centrica believe this is an important milestone in maintaining operations in Morecambe Bay.
Mike Astell, Regional Director for the East Irish Sea at Centrica said: "This is incredibly exciting news for everyone involved because it marks another lease of life for the Morecambe Bay area, securing energy for the UK and jobs for the local area." This is the first time in around ten years that the region has been able to produce natural gas and will help secure energy for the UK as well as a number of employment opportunities.
