Cold weather and limited renewable generation is expected to lift gas demand over the coming weeks which helped the near curve rally higher yesterday morning. Prices ended the session practically unchanged as most contracts eased down in the afternoon due to a drop in coal and oil. Tightening gas supply, limited renewable availability and a drop in temperatures all combined to support contracts at the front of the power curve yesterday. Contracts further out displayed minor losses due to a drop in coal and oil.

Prices ended the session practically unchanged as most contracts eased down in the afternoon due to a drop in coal and oil. Day-Ahead power displays another gain as wind levels are set to decrease further tomorrow, while cold temperatures continue to lift heating demand. The rest of the curve is largely bearish, following weaker gas and coal.

Brent Crude trades lower as OPEC members have failed to agree to an extension on production cuts. However, the UK’s decision to approve the widespread use of a Coronavirus vaccine has offered support this morning.

1-year forward prices

Market close data has revealed that the 1-year forward price for commercial gas moved slightly higher, while commercial electricity recorded a loss, closing at 39.58ppt and £48.18/MWh, respectively.
